Section F: Sustaining the Human Uses of the Coast

Last Update March 28, 1996

The coast is one of Florida’s most valued resources. The value placed on the coast by visitors and residents is evidenced by the number of visits to the coast and the enormous investment made each year in activities oriented toward the coast. Should the coast deteriorate, its recreational and commercial uses would be compromised. If the recreational and commercial uses of the coast are jeopardized, Florida’s economy will be adversely impacted.

This issue addresses the importance of safeguarding the attributes which are most valued by human users of the coast. The primary concerns are maintenance of recreational value, sustaining economic use, and balancing development with coastal resources. The maintenance of recreational values concerns managing coastal attributes which are important for recreational activities such as boating, diving, fishing, swimming, and bathing. Sustainable economic use focuses on maintaining properties important for commercial use such as tourism, commercial ports, transport of goods, commercial fishing, and cruise boat sailings. Balancing development with coastal resources concerns the encroachment by development, which may threaten the undeveloped areas and conseq uently adversely impact commercial and recreational uses of the coast.
