Some data gaps have been identified:

• The volume of hazardous waste generated and treated or recycled on-site is unknown. This gap will be filled by the processing of the biennial hazardous waste report by the Department of Toxic Substances Control.

• Surface water quality and quantitative discharges to surface water are not consistently measured.

These data gaps will be further identified, and remedies suggested, in an analysis of the Cal/EPA environmental indicators to be performed by an organization external to Cal/EPA. Additionally, this analysis will determine the feasibility of proceeding beyond environmental indicators to the preparation of an environmental index, which would be a single readily-understood measure of overall environmental quality.
