There is very limited scientific knowledge, public awareness, and control of conditions affecting the quality of indoor air. Improperly ventilated air-tight homes and work places limit air flow and create indoor conditions that place public health at ri
sk. Much attention has been given to the effects of cigarette smoke, paraformaldehyde insulation and asbestos. Heating by-products, cleaning agents, paint and furniture fabrication and preservative materials are also important concerns, as well as natur
ally occurring radon, pathogen, allergens, and dust that have adverse effects on indoor environments.
