Indoor Environmental Management

GOAL:
Protect public health from the adverse effects of indoor air pollution.

OBJECTIVE:
Reduce artificially and naturally induced indoor air pollution.

STATUS & TRENDS:
There is very limited scientific knowledge, public awareness, and control of conditions affecting the quality of indoor air. Improperly ventilated air-tight homes and work places limit air flow and create indoor conditions that place public health at ri sk. Much attention has been given to the effects of cigarette smoke, paraformaldehyde insulation and asbestos. Heating by-products, cleaning agents, paint and furniture fabrication and preservative materials are also important concerns, as well as natur ally occurring radon, pathogen, allergens, and dust that have adverse effects on indoor environments.

STRATEGIES:

  1. Identify, study and monitor sources of indoor air pollution and develop criteria and standards for all pollutants that can significantly affect public health.
  2. Develop, improve and implement a comprehensive program that reduces indoor air pollution and mitigates effects,
  3. Develop and implement a strong public awareness program on the sources and control of indoor air pollution.
  4. Establish an interagency mechanism to review indoor air pollution issues on an annual basis and to provide a framework for prompt handling of any new issue that may arise.
  5. Encourage elimination of second hand smoke, formaldehyde and asbestos in the indoor environment.
