State of Connecticut

Goals and Benchmarks
For the Year 2000 and Beyond

from The Connecticut Progress Council, January 1995

The status of our resources and the quality of our environment is the wealth of this state. That wealth and that capital determine quite precisely our standard of living and the quality of our lives. The continued preservation of that quality depends upon an ethic that is grounded in environmental awareness and equity, upon wise management of our lands, upon preventing degradation caused by pollutants, and upon practicing a stewardship that preserves critical environmental resources and habitats for future generations.

The 300 benchmarks are organized in five sections: families and communities, education, health, the economy, and the environment. The urgent benchmarks represent areas of special concern for Connecticut for the next five years. This on-line version features only the environmental benchmarks and endnotes from the January 1995 publication. Further informaion about these sections, or the complete document, may be obtained from Office of Policy and Management below.

The Connecticut Progress Council was created under PA 93-387 (An Act Concerning Benchmarks for Decision Making by State Government) to establish goals and benchmarks to measure our state's progress in forming Connecticut's future. It is a permanently established body with a current membership of twenty-seven.
